Look it up before you go: ______________________________________________

Jobs they often hire for: caregiver/home health aide, CNA, dietary aide, housekeeping, patient transport

Good to know: Work happens in clients' homes across the county, not in one office.

What to bring

  • State ID or driver's license
  • Social Security card (or other I-9 document)
  • 3 copies of your resume
  • A list of 3 references with phone numbers
  • A pen and this sheet
  • The Federal Bonding info below, in case they worry about hiring someone with a record
  • CNA or CPR certification if you have one
  • A list of references who can speak to how you treat people

What to wear

Business casual or clean scrubs: neat, covered, simple.

Questions they may ask

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. Why do you want to work here?
  3. Do you have a criminal record? Tell me about it.
  4. Why is there a gap in your work history?
  5. When can you start?
  6. Why do you want to work in care?
  7. How would you handle a difficult or confused patient?
  8. Are you comfortable with a background check?

When they ask about your record

"Yes. In [year] I was convicted of [offense in plain words]. I took responsibility and served my time. While I was there I [class, certification, job, or recovery work]. Since then I have [what you have done]. I am ready to work, and I am covered by the free Federal Bonding Program for my first six months."

Keep it under 30 seconds, be honest, and bring it back to the job. If your record was expunged, you may answer about the expunged part as if it never happened.

Questions to ask them

  1. Which roles here are open to someone with my background?
  2. Do you pay for CNA or CPR training?
  3. What does the schedule look like?
  4. What would make someone great in this job?
  5. What are the next steps, and when should I follow up?
