Our policies

Broken Champions does not discriminate against any person seeking or receiving services on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, religion, religious belief, a refusal to hold a religious belief, or a refusal to attend or participate in a religious practice.

• You may receive our services whether or not you share our faith.
• Worship, prayer, Bible study, and discipleship are always voluntary and are offered separately from other services.
• Saying no to any religious activity will never affect your support.

• If you would rather receive services from a different provider, we will help you find one.
• For programs funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, you may file a complaint with the DOJ Office for Civil Rights.

Explicitly religious activities are never paid for with government funds.

• Screening: application, interview, references, and a criminal background check for every volunteer; driving-record checks for drivers. A past record does not automatically disqualify someone; we review each person against the role.
• Training first: orientation, boundaries, and the Waypointer Covenant before any field role.

• Two-person and public-first rules for release day and the first 72 hours.
• Zero tolerance for sexual misconduct, consistent with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), and no romantic relationships between volunteers and participants.
• Mandated reporting: in Indiana, anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect must report it to the DCS hotline at 1-800-800-5556.

• Facility rules: Waypointers serve from the outside and contact people inside only through channels open to the public (approved visitor lists, inspected mail, facility phone systems, and IDOC deposit services), following all Indiana Department of Correction rules.
• No money hand to hand: volunteers never give cash, co-sign, lend vehicles, or provide housing personally.

We collect only the participant information needed to provide services. Case files are restricted to staff and the team leaders who need them, and are never shared publicly. We do not sell or trade donor information. Donor names are not published without permission. Email us to see, correct, or delete information we hold about you, where the law allows.

• Stories are shared only with informed, written consent, and never asked for while someone is incarcerated or in the first 72 hours after release.
• The person chooses how they are identified (full name, first name, a pseudonym, or no name) and whether photos are used.
• No offense details, facility names, or family names are shared unless the person asks.

• The person reviews and approves the final version.
• Consent can be withdrawn at any time; we remove online content within 10 business days.
• Saying no never affects services.

Direct help to individuals (commissary support, release-day items, lodging, and reentry-fund disbursements) follows written, objective eligibility criteria applied consistently, and is approved under staff and board oversight, not by any one person. Records show the recipient, amount, purpose, and any relationship to insiders.

Participant choice: participants choose their own vendors and lenders. Broken Champions does not require or steer purchases to any business, including any related company. Purchases supported through the reentry fund are made at fair market value. Credit unions set loan terms independently.

We accept cash, checks, and online gifts, and may accept in-kind gifts that serve our programs. We decline gifts with conditions that conflict with our mission or policies. Every gift of $250 or more receives a written acknowledgment that meets IRS requirements, and gifts over $75 that include goods or services receive a disclosure of their value.
