Good to know: In 2019 Dollar General paid $6 million to settle an EEOC lawsuit over its criminal background checks and agreed to revise its screening process (https://hrdive.com/news/dollar-general-ends-eeoc-background-check-suit-with-6m-settlement/566534). That's a changed process, not a second-chance pledge.

What to bring

• State ID or driver's license
• Social Security card (or other I-9 document)
• 3 copies of your resume
• A list of 3 references with phone numbers
• A pen and this sheet
• The Federal Bonding info below, in case they worry about hiring someone with a record

What to wear

Business casual: clean pants, a collared or plain shirt, clean shoes.

Questions they may ask

1. Tell me about yourself.
2. Why do you want to work here?
3. Do you have a criminal record? Tell me about it.
4. Why is there a gap in your work history?
5. When can you start?
6. How would you handle an unhappy customer?
7. What is your availability?
8. Tell me about a time you were trusted with money or merchandise.

When they ask about your record

Keep it under 30 seconds, be honest, and bring it back to the job. If your record was expunged, you may answer about the expunged part as if it never happened.

Questions to ask them

1. Are overnight stocking shifts open?
2. How are schedules made?
3. Is there a discount or benefits for part-time?
4. What would make someone great in this job?
5. What are the next steps, and when should I follow up?
